What to know

Mouth guards are dental appliances that cover your teeth. Dentists recommend them for a number of reasons like Grinding clenching and other TMJ Symptoms.

Other things to note

Wearing a mouth guard while you sleep can help reduce your risk for

  • Wear and tear from clenching or grinding your teeth.

  • Snoring.

  • Jaw pain, headaches, facial pain and other symptoms of TMJ disorder.

  • Sleep apnea and related complications, including high blood pressure and daytime fatigue.

  • Wearing a night guard stops your molars from wearing down. Through cushioning the teeth, you’ll prevent dental issues caused by bruxism, including:

  • Worn enamel

  • Cracked or broken teeth

  • Damaged dental work

  • Tooth sensitivity

 Pros

   1. Guard Teeth Against Damage

Teeth grinding at night cause severe dental issues. Also, teeth start to wear down. With wearing down of enamel increases the risk around the roots. This also leads to cavities, toothache and sensitive teeth.

A sports guard protects teeth from the damage by preventing clenching while sleeping. It stops worn down and chipped teeth in no time.

   2. Prevent Tooth and Jaw Pain

Bruxism can lead to other problems like jaw ache, headaches, tooth pain, and wear and tear on the teeth. Mouth guards are built to be worn while sleeping to help prevent any pain from happening.

   3. Customized Guards

For custom guards, the dentist allows you to bite down on clay to get a replica of your teeth. He or she then sends the mold to a lab.

The bonus point is that the dentist can adjust the guard thickness depending on the bruxism severity. Doctors also make sure that it’s comfortable.

  4. Get Rid of Headache

Clenching puts plenty of stress on the jaw. Users experience various levels of jaw pain. This results in migraines and headaches, thereby making it tough for users to follow their everyday routine. But the use of night guards can be effective in preventing it and other known TMJ symptoms.

  5. Promote Good Night Sleep

Night guards minimize grinding and clenching to maximize comfort, thus improving your sleep patterns and giving you a better night’s sleep! A night guard will secure your jaw at its optimal position to promote deeper muscle relaxation. When these muscles are relaxed, stress is reduced, and sleep is more efficient.

Wearing a guard allows you to have a peaceful goodnight sleep. It prevents the clenching force during the night. This makes muscles relaxed while sleeping.

There are three main types of mouth guards. We can categorize them according to purpose:

1.Mouth guards for grinding teeth and clenching and TMJ.

These appliances help protect your teeth from the effects of grinding and clenching. They may also reduce the effects of TMJ disorders. You can wear this type of mouth guard any time, night or day. But because most people grind or clench their teeth during sleep, it’s common to wear them at night. (Some people refer to these appliances as night guards.)

   2. Snoring and sleep apnea

People with chronic snoring or obstructive sleep apnea may benefit from a custom mouth guard. This type of appliance shifts and repositions your jaw to open your airway during sleep.

   3. In addition, mouth guards may be store-bought or custom-made:

  • Store-bought: There are two main types of store-bought mouth guards. Stock (which you wear as-is, right out of the box) and boil-and-bite (which you can slightly customize at home). Store-bought guards are cheaper, but they’re not as effective as custom-made mouth guards for protection against teeth grinding or sports-related injuries. They’re also not appropriate for treating sleep apnea.

  • Custom-made: A dentist creates this type of mouth guard to fit your exact dental anatomy. Because they’re designed to fit your teeth, they tend to be more comfortable than store-bought mouth guards. Custom-made mouth guards provide effective protection against bruxism and sports-related trauma. They’re also a common first line of defense in sleep apnea treatment.

Mouth Guard Cleaning Tips

Once you get a night guard, it’s vital to care for it properly. It will continue to protect your teeth for a long time.
Your everyday oral health routine should include proper cleaning of your night guard. Follow these tips for cleaning and it will stay in tip-top shape for the years to come.
    1. Wash it Instantly After Wearing
Each time you wear your guard, wash it using warm water immediately. This will eliminate any debris and plaque stuck to it.
    2. Place your Guard on a Clean Surface and Dry it Fully
Make sure your night guard is completely dry before you store it to prevent bacterial growth. It’s a good idea to pick a flat and clean surface. Usually, it should take within 15 minutes to half an hour.
    3. Use a Robust Case for Storing
Store your guard in a strong case while you are not wearing it. Remember, strong it in the bathroom cause humidity to wear it down with time. We advise you to store it in the bedroom.
Note: Avoid applying toothpaste to the brush. It is because this can be abrasive and may cause it to wear out more speedily.
  4. Brush it As You Do for Your Tooth. It is also essential to lightly brush your guard with a toothbrush. If you want, use the same toothbrush that you use for teeth cleaning daily.

Cons

  1. Cost

They can be costly because mouthguards are frequently excluded from insurance policies. Periodically, they also need to be replaced due to daily wear and tear.

   2. Getting used to wearing it

Patients may need a bit of time to get used to donning a mouthguard. Regarding night guards especially, even though some people might be tempted to skip a night, it is crucial to wear it every night to avoid having issues related to teeth clenching.

   3. You have to follow the instructions

You must adhere to your dentist’s recommendations to get the most out of wearing your mouthguard. This contains guidelines for both using and cleaning it. A mouthguard can develop germs if it isn’t cleaned frequently.

Of course, most people shouldn’t have any trouble getting past this since directions for any type of dental guard are very straightforward. Consult your local dentist if you have any other concerns about how to use or care for it.

Not using the guard as per the instruction can make it less effective. For a good outcome, it is important to wear it every night and follow instructions properly.
